Film night at UVic

Cinecenta is showing an evening of moutaineering films on June 16th. They promise a "exhilarating and inspiring cinematic adventure". Sounds like a Club Mud event to me!!
It's a good idea to buy your tickets ahead of time.

Mount Galiano

Hey everyone, we’re planning A hike up Mount Galiano on Saturday, May 28.  We catch the ferry to Sturdies Bay on Galiano Island at 9:35 AM Sat, and after we arrive we’ll head up to the base of Mt Galiano. Give yourself plenty of time to catch that ferry, as there are very few trips to and from Galiano, and it might be busy. Carpooling is a really good idea to save money. Lets all make contact and arrange ride sharing.
Tracy and I plan on staying the night in the lovely Montague Harbour Provincial Park (we have reservations for a campsite that can accommodate two more if anyone would like to join us), but for those who don’t want to spend the night they can leave on the 5:20 PM ferry back to Swartz Bay. If we have time we can visit the Hummingbird pub as well.

A little different; an ask and an idea

First of all, I'm hoping people can sign this AVAAZ petition I've started.

My petition on foreign aid.

In a nutshell, it's asking the feds to finally start working towards fulfilling a 50-year old promise to the world to dedicate 0.7% of GDP to foreign aid. Currently we are at 0.24% which is almost the worst in the developed world. Even little Ireland spends more, and most G7 countries have reached or are close to that target. Canada has long abdicated responsibility to the world, and this is just one critical way we need to re-engage. The specific details and lots more info are in the petition.

I'd also like to suggest something different this spring: lets do Mt. Galiano in May. We can all carpool and take the ferry over, hike the mountain and then spend the rest of the trip on the beach at Montegue harbour having lunch etc. The climb isn't that long, about an hour to the top, but the first half is a bit of a killer, than it gets a lot easier. The views are wonderfully stunning at the top, as well as warm and sunny.

If the weather isn't good we can postpone till June; you really want sunshine to enjoy the beauty of the top. We can decide on a second choice before then.

A new plan for May

We've changed the date of the May hike, and we have a great plan (thanks to Devon and Ian):

New date: Sunday, May 31st

Destination: Parkinson Creek Trailhead (on the Juan de Fuca Trail).

Parkinson Creek Trailhead is located at Kilometer 37.6 of the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail and provides access to begin or terminate a 10 kilometer hike  to (or from)Botanical Beach or a nine kilometer hike to (or from) Sombrio Beach. From here you can hike east to Sombrio or west to Botanical Beach. There are two campsites close by - Payzant Creek at Kilometer 40 and Little Kuitsche Creek at Kilometer 33.5. This intermediate section of the trail winds through regenerated logged areas and some old growth forest fringe and along spectacular rugged shoreline. Keep a wary eye out for marine mammals and other wild life.
http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/explore/parkpgs/juan_de_fuca/jdf_map.pdf

Let's meet at Serious Coffee (Westshore, of course) at 8 am. We need to head out by 8:30 to give us travel time.

Pack a lunch, bring your lunch, your dog and your raincoat (just in case).
